The Clearwater team has advised Zürcher Kantonalbank on its sale of the pension fund administration business (BVG management business) of Swisscanto Vorsorge AG (SVAG) to PFS Pension Fund Services AG (PFS), a leading provider in the pension fund management sector.

Zürcher Kantonalbank is reinvesting a 20% stake in PFS alongside Zurich Insurance Group with a stake of 8%. The majority of shares will remain in the hands of the managing partners and employees.

With this transaction, one of the largest providers in the pension fund management sector is created. By merging the BVG management business of SVAG and PFS, economies of scale can be realized and, with around 80 employees, a leading provider in the market is created whose clients include 60 pension funds with over 65,000 beneficiaries and pension assets of CHF 15 billion.

The pension fund administration business is undergoing major changes in a consolidating market. Size and thus economies of scale will play a key role in future, even more attractive digital administration solutions. We are delighted that in PFS we have found a strong partner for SVAG's BVG administration business that is excellently positioned for the future. Pension activities remain one of the bank's strategic priorities. The fact that we also believe in the growth prospects in the administration business is underlined by the Zürcher Kantonalbank's substantial stake in PFS.

Heinz Kunz, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SVAG

SVAG's BVG administration business and our portfolio complement each other ideally. While PFS contributes a modern IT architecture and has a strong foothold in the management of autonomous pension funds, SVAG is well positioned in the area of collective foundations. The merger puts us among the top 5 in the market and puts us in an ideal position for future growth in a consolidating market. Not least our customers will benefit from this.
